Leaders of Thai Nguyen and Phu Tho provinces met in Phu Tho on the afternoon of August 5 to discuss an investment plan for the construction of the Tam Dao Tunnel, a key transport project linking the two localities.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Trinh Xuan Truong, Secretary of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Party Committee; Mr. Vuong Quoc Tuan, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen Provincial People's Committee; and Mr. Tran Duy Dong, Chairman of the Phu Tho Provincial People's Committee.

Delegations from both provinces conducted a field survey at the proposed route on the Phu Tho side of the project. Resort, urban, and service developments have already taken shape on both the western and eastern slopes of the Tam Dao mountain range.
However, transport infrastructure remains fragmented, with most roads running along each side of the mountain, while direct connections between the two slopes are limited.
The proposed Tam Dao Road Tunnel, which will link Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, and Hanoi by connecting the eastern and western slopes of Tam Dao, is expected to open up new development opportunities, strengthen regional connectivity, and promote socio-economic growth, tourism, services, and logistics.
According to the preliminary design, the project will have a total length of approximately 19.65 kilometers, including a 2-kilometer mountain tunnel. The total estimated investment is VND 5.8 trillion, with construction scheduled to take place from 2026 to 2029.
Speaking at the meeting, leaders of both provinces requested that, following the discussions, the consulting unit work closely with relevant agencies in both localities to conduct more in-depth studies on geological conditions and environmental ecosystems. The goal is to ensure that, once completed, the project will fully realize its role as a catalyst for regional development.
