Trade union housing program: Providing workers with a place to call home

The "Trade Union Housing Program" continues to help low-income workers in Thai Nguyen achieve their dream of owning a home. Here is our report.

After more than 15 years working in the irrigation sector, Doan Van Dong, an employee of Thai Nguyen Irrigation Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd., remains the sole breadwinner for his family. With a modest income, an unemployed wife, and children who require ongoing medical care, owning a permanent home seemed out of reach. Thanks to financial support from the trade union housing Fund, his family has now begun construction of a new house, turning a long-held dream into reality.

Mr. Doan Van Dong, Thai Nguyen Irrigation Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd., shared, "I'm deeply grateful for the support from the trade union. Thanks to this assistance, my family has been able to build a new home and finally enjoy a more stable life".

Another beneficiary is Luu Thi Van, a worker at Dousun Vietnam. A single mother in poor health, she struggled to make ends meet on her monthly income. Although her parents gave her a plot of land, she and her child had spent years living in a small kitchen because they could not afford to build a home. Support from the trade union housing Fund has enabled the family to move into a safe and permanent house.

Mrs. Luu Thi Van, of Dousun Vietnam Company, said, "I was truly surprised and grateful when the trade union helped me build this home".

Launched in 2006 by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, the trade union housing program has become a vital source of support for workers facing housing difficulties. After funding the construction of five new homes and the repair of one home in 2025, the Thai Nguyen Confederation of Labor plans to support 11 homes in 2026, providing VND 60 million for each project. Beyond improving living conditions, the program offers workers greater peace of mind, allowing them to focus on their jobs and build a more secure future.

According to Mr. Doan Manh Thang, Vice Chairman of the Thai Nguyen Confederation of Labor, "during the first six months of the year, trade unions at all levels provided nearly 1 billion dong in housing support to union members and workers facing housing difficulties".

Each home built under the Trade Union Housing Program gives workers not only a safe place to live, but also greater confidence to overcome difficulties and build a better future. The program reflects the Thai Nguyen Confederation of Labor's ongoing commitment to improving workers' lives and supporting those in need.
