Accelerating rooftop solar development plan

On July 28, Chairman of Thai Nguyen Provincial People's Committee Vuong Quoc Tuan chaired a conference on rooftop solar development.

As of June 30, Thai Nguyen has installed about 73.46 megawatts of rooftop solar capacity combined with energy storage systems. By 2030, Thai Nguyen aims to equip more than 80 percent of eligible factory rooftops in industrial parks and industrial clusters with rooftop solar and battery storage, reaching a total capacity of around 950 megawatts.

The province also plans to install rooftop solar systems at around half of all eligible government offices, public institutions, organizations and private homes, adding another 120 megawatts of capacity.

During the conference, delegates discussed electricity supply and rising power demand, along with measures to promote safe and efficient energy use, manage electricity consumption and shift peak demand. They also proposed solutions to expand rooftop solar at industrial parks and production facilities across the province.

Addressing the meeting, Chairman Vuong Quoc Tuan said that under Vietnam's National Power Development Plan, Thai Nguyen is expected to develop 1,070 megawatts of rooftop solar capacity by 2030.

To achieve that target, the province will begin implementing its 2026–2030 Rooftop Solar Development Plan from August 2026, with clear annual targets and a detailed implementation roadmap.

The Department of Industry and Trade has been assigned to prepare technical guidelines and public awareness materials on rooftop solar installation and operation. Thai Nguyen Power Company will assess the capacity of the local power grid and provide technical guidance.

The provincial Industrial Parks Management Board will assist businesses with installation, while the Department of Finance will develop funding plans and support mechanisms for rooftop solar projects at government offices and schools.

Local authorities have also been instructed to step up public outreach and encourage households to install rooftop solar systems, helping strengthen energy security and promote green growth across the province.
