Teaching general knowledge combined with vocational training

Combining knowledge teaching with vocational training is one of the important solutions to stream students after graduating from secondary school, and at the same time, helps students better orientate in career choices, shorten study time, and have many job opportunities after graduation. Grasping this policy, vocational training institutions in the province have made many innovations in enrollment, training, and cooperation with businesses.

In the academic year 2022-2023, the College of Technology and Commerce (Ministry of Industry and Trade) enrolled 950 intermediate and college students, an increase of 250 targets compared to the previous school year. Of these, up to one-third of students, after graduating from secondary school, do not take the exam to enter grade 10 but immediately register for cultural and vocational training at the school. This number shows that many students have determined their learning qualifications and have an apparent future career orientation.

Mr. Phan Van Tu, Rector of the College of Technology and Commerce, said: The stream of students graduating from secondary school is the right policy. Through streamlining, they are given learning opportunities to ensure their knowledge and health when entering the labor market. To meet the needs of students and parents, currently, the school is training 89 occupations at levels from elementary to college. From February every year, we have organized the recruitment work for junior high schools and high schools in the province.

Talking with us, Ngo Quang Vinh, a student of Intermediate Electronic Class 59D, College of Technology and Commerce, said: I had clearly defined future career goals and decided to register for both vocational and general knowledge studying so that after graduation, I will return to my hometown to work in electronics and refrigeration field. We study culture in the morning and vocational training in the afternoon at school. We have a lunch break in the dormitory of the school.

To create the best conditions for students to practice and improve their skills, as well as expand job opportunities, vocational training institutions in the province have promoted cooperation with many businesses during and after the training process, such as Samsung Electronics Vietnam Thai Nguyen, Canon Vietnam, Hong Hai Science and Technology Group. Here, the students have practical experience and conditions to apply the knowledge they have learned in their work, improve their skills and be able to go to work right after graduation.

According to a survey by the College of Technology and Commerce, 100 percent of electrical engineering students and 80 percent of mechanical engineering students have jobs in the right trained fields. For Thai Nguyen College of Industry, in the 2022-2023 school year, the school enrolls over 400 students graduating from secondary schools to study general knowledge in continuing education and vocational training, an increase of 120 targets compared to 2021.

Ms. Gia Thi Dinh, Head of Training Department - Thai Nguyen Industrial College, said that most students apply for electrical majors, automotive technology, and sewing. To improve the quality of education, the school organizes a review for the students to consolidate their knowledge in the first month after entering the school. For students living in dormitories, their self-study hours are managed by officers of the education department.

To implement the post-secondary streamlining in the 2022-2023 school year, the Department of Education and Training has assigned 9 vocational and continuing education centers in the province to open 37 classes with about 1,635 students in grade 10. This is an opportunity for them to immediately enter the labor market without taking extra time to continue their vocational training or to apply for admission to colleges and universities.
