In Vietnam’s mining industry, Nui Phao Mining Company (“NPMC”, or “Nui Phao”) is emerging as a leading example of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

Beyond revitalizing mined land, Nui Phao is actively fostering a shared sense of environmental responsibility within the community.

For years, Nui Phao Mining has made significant investments in tree planting and maintenance to green the areas surrounding its processing plant.

Mined land transformed into forests

While post-mining land rehabilitation remains a major challenge for most mining companies, at NPMC, it stands as a firm commitmentcarried out scientifically and responsibly.

Nui Phao has been steadily implementing land restoration and environmental protection efforts for years. In2024, the company reforested an additional 0.71 hectares of slopes at its northern waste dump using hybrid acacia trees and native grasses. To date, the total rehabilitated area has reached an impressive 64.61 hectares. This reflects the company’s long-term vision, consistent dedication, and sustained investment in environmental sustainability.

Among the plant species selected for greening the mining site and restoring the ecosystem, acacia hybrid continues to be the main choice. After years of testing, this species has proven its strong growth and excellent adaptation to the local soil and climate conditions. The company has planted 1,550 new acacia trees, combined with native grasses, to prevent soil erosion, retain soil, and attract local insects, microorganisms, and other fauna and flora. This effort is a crucial step in gradual restoration of the area's biodiversity.

A key success in Nui Phao's environmental restoration efforts is the Cultivation of Energy s for Post-mining Sites Project (CPEP), a collaboration with the German-based UFU Institute for Environmental Research. In 2016, the company and UFU signed an agreement to pilot the cultivation of energy crops on Nui Phao's mining land. This project is part of a larger cooperation framework between Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) and Germany's Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), focusing on environmental protection and climate change.

After eight years of trials on various plant species, the project successfully identified several suitable plants, namely acacia hybrid and VA06 grass. These species are ideal for environmental restoration at the mine and can be scaled up by local communities for economic development.

According to calculations, a 6-year-old hectare of acacia hybrid can absorb approximately 172 tons of CO2, significantly contributing to greenhouse gas reduction. The project has been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for its positive contribution to green economic development and sustainable development in Vietnam.

Promoting Green Living, Fostering a Civilized Community

Nui Phao's "green development" strategy extends beyond its plantpremises. The company actively brings environmental protection initiatives closer to the community.

In May 2025, NPMC donated 500 trash bins and provided waste sorting training to over 200 local households. Valued at VND 100 million, the bins replaced makeshift containers, contributing to a cleaner urban environment and encouraging better hygiene practices in the community.

NPMC's staff went on to directly instruct residents on how to sort wasteseparating organic waste for reuse and inorganic waste for recycling. This effort aims to reduce waste treatment costs and mitigate negative environmental impacts.

Sustainabilityis a journey

"We are committed to continuing our partnership with the community and local authorities to restore the post-mining environment, develop a sustainable ecosystem, and adapt to climate change,"shareda representative of Nui Phao. "Greening and rehabilitating the mining land is how we fulfill our ESG commitments and pursue harmonious development with nature."

Concrete actions such as tree planting, land reclamation, promoting green living, and supporting the community clearly demonstrate a company that places people and the environment at the heart of its development. Today, Nui Phao is beyond an ordinary mine in Thai Nguyen; it is an exemplary pioneer in “responsible and sustainable mining” that inspires green and sustainable development in harmony with local communities.
